Study: Rubbing your eyes could lead to permanent vision problems

A new study has shown that rubbing your eyes may provide a feeling of relief, but at the same time increases the risk of corneal damage and infections, according to “Science”.
Although rubbing the eyes often seems harmless, it can have consequences for the delicate structure of the eye, especially the cornea – the transparent layer at the front of the eye.
This action is usually triggered by allergies, dry eyes, fatigue, or irritation.
For a moment, it may bring relief because it stimulates tear production and activates pressure-sensitive nerves around the eye.
However, rubbing your eyes can transfer bacteria and viruses from your hands to your eyes, increasing the risk of infections such as conjunctivitis (eye infection).
When done forcefully, rubbing can cause corneal scratches, damage small blood vessels, and lead to a temporary increase in pressure inside the eye.
The greatest concern is related to frequent and intense eye rubbing over a long period of time.
Studies have linked this habit to keratoconus – a condition in which the front surface of the eye becomes thinner and deforms into a cone-like shape, causing distorted vision.
This does not mean that an occasional gentle rub will immediately damage the eyes.
However, doctors emphasize that frequent eye rubbing is a habit that should be avoided.
To relieve eye irritation, safer alternatives are recommended, such as artificial tears, allergy treatment, cold compresses, and proper eye care.
The referenced study is a scientific review conducted by a team of ophthalmologists led by Dr. Hatim Najmi and his co-authors from medical institutions in Saudi Arabia.
The review was based on an analysis of 24 existing studies examining this connection.
The study was published in the scientific journal “International Journal of Ophthalmology”, an international publication specializing in the field of ophthalmology.
