In a decision with significant political and institutional resonance, the Constitutional Court has suspended the decree of the President of the Republic calling for early elections in the Municipality of Tirana, which had been scheduled for November 9, 2025.
The suspension follows an appeal filed by former mayor Erion Veliaj, who is contesting the decision to remove him from office.
The Court announced that it has accepted Veliaj’s request for review and decided to hold a public plenary session on October 31, 2025. Until that date, the implementation of the part of the presidential decree setting the election date for the Mayor of Tirana is temporarily suspended.
The decision was taken unanimously by the panel of the Constitutional Court and is viewed as an important development in the balance of power between the executive branch and the country’s independent judicial institutions.
