A fire at an elderly home in Belgrade claimed the lives of eight people and left several others seriously injured, as the flames engulfed nearly the entire building.

According to Serbian media, it is reported that among the victims is the person who started the fire. He is said to have suffered from mental health issues and set his mattress on fire, but the flames spread throughout the entire building.

Family members of the elderly residents who were staying at the home arrived at the scene in the Barajevo area, visibly shaken.

One citizen, whose mother lived in the home, said he had no information about whether she was alive or not.

“She was on the ground floor in the part of the house that was burned. I have no information about whether she is alive or not. The last time I was here was on January 9th, when I brought my mother things and everything she needed,” he said.

“My father-in-law was inside, exactly in that part that was completely burned, right under the chimney,” said a woman.

She added that they have no information about his condition or whether he survived, but they know that four male bodies were found in a completely charred state.

Meanwhile, it has been reported that three patients injured in the fire are in critical condition at the Clinical Center of Serbia (CCS).

“The patients are in serious condition and all intensive care methods are being applied,” Serbian media report.
