The number of high school graduates drops again this year; special tests introduced for students with different abilities

Emigration and declining birth rates are significantly shrinking the younger generation, resulting in even fewer high school graduates taking this year’s State Matura exams.

Around 26,500 young people across the country have begun preparations for completing high school and planning their path toward universities, both domestically and abroad.

Deputy Minister of Education Orjana Osmani explains that students have now completed the A1 form, which determines their elective subject and indicates their intended university direction.

“Consultations have started in all schools across Albania to help students prepare for all exams,” she says. “On January 7, we also published practice tests, which we believe have helped students in their preparation.”

Although administering the Matura exam faces challenges almost every year, the Deputy Minister emphasizes the measures being taken to prevent issues during the test. “All responsible staff must exercise their authority to ensure the smooth conduct of the exam,” she states.

Meanwhile, this year students with different abilities will again have special tests with a lower difficulty level. Their grades will carry the same weight as those of students taking standard tests.

The State Matura begins in June with the foreign language exam on June 2. The Albanian language and literature exam will be held on June 9, followed by mathematics on June 16. The Matura concludes with the elective subject exam on June 23.
