On November 29, 1954, after 62 years of activity, Ellis Island, the most important immigration inspection and reception center in New York, permanently closed its doors. Inaugurated on January 1, 1892, it became the main entry point for millions of people who hoped to begin a new life in the United States of America.
The first immigrant to be registered on the island was Annie Moore, a young Irish girl who arrived together with her family.
