This month we commemorate the birth of the talented boxer from Korça, Theodhor “Dhori” Gërnjoti.
He inherited his love for boxing from his father, Rafail Gërnjoti, a boxer and Honored Master of Sport, from whom he received not only his passion for the ring but also his first lessons in discipline, dedication, and respect for the sport.
The boxer from Korça began his career at the age of 14, quickly becoming a symbol of sport, courage, and perseverance. In 1962, he took part in the senior championship, demonstrating his talent and great potential in the ring at a very young age.
His greatest weapon was not only his physical strength, but also his extraordinary preparation and iron physical discipline, which made him stand out among many athletes of his time.
After shining in the ring and becoming one of the most outstanding athletes of his era, he nurtured a great dream: to one day fight the greatest boxer of all time, Muhammad Ali. To pursue this dream and to find the freedom he lacked, Dhori attempted to escape from Albania, but for this reason he was sentenced by the communist regime to 20 years in prison.
Even though he faced difficult years, torture, and harsh prisons, Dhori was never broken and never gave up his dignity and spiritual strength.
In the 1990s, he symbolically returned to the ring, bringing back the emotions and memories of an athlete who had made history and bringing hope to Albanian sport.
Dhori Gërnjoti remains a rare example of a champion who never surrendered, neither to opponents in the ring nor to dictatorship. His life is a testament to strength of character, love for sport, and human resilience.
The unforgettable Dhori Gërnjoti.
