The search continues for twenty migrants who are missing after a boat sank off the coast of Lampedusa Island in Italy. The small vessel departed from Zuwara, Libya, at 10:00 PM on Monday, December 30. The bodies of seven individuals (two Syrians, two Sudanese, two Egyptians, and an 8-year-old Syrian boy) are being transferred from the rescue point to the island’s port, heading towards Porto Empedocle.

The tragedy occurred about 20 miles from the Libyan coast, in the Libyan or Maltese SAR zone. Around 2:00 AM on Tuesday, December 31, the boat began to take on water. Between 2:30 and 3:00 AM, the anxiety of the 27 people on board turned into panic, according to survivors.
