A day after the inauguration, the new U.S. President, Donald Trump, aims to initiate the deportation of millions of undocumented immigrants, warning of massive arrests. Raids will take place across the country starting Tuesday, Border Protection officer Tom Homan announced on Fox News on Friday. Meanwhile, U.S. Border Patrol officials conducted security drills with barbed wire and concrete blocks along the border with Mexico, writes A2 CNN.
Homan, a hardline figure and former head of the ICE border protection agency, commented on Fox News about media reports that a raid would occur in Chicago on Tuesday. Chicago is just “one of many places,” said the 62-year-old. No one will be spared. “If they are in the country illegally, they have a problem.”
According to the Washington Post, the raid in Chicago will last a week, with up to 200 ICE officers on standby. The Midwest metropolis has declared itself a “sanctuary city” to prevent the deportation of undocumented immigrants. Chicago Police Department spokesman Don Terry announced that local police would not interfere with federal law enforcement officials. However, the city will not share any information with federal immigration authorities. In addition to Chicago, other Democrat-governed cities have also declared themselves as sanctuary locations.
Authorities estimate that about 11 million undocumented immigrants live in the United States. Trump’s deportation plans could directly impact approximately 20 million families.
According to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) office in El Paso, drills have been ongoing since 2019. They aim to prepare officials for possible incidents at the border. Residents of Ciudad Juárez reported that these drills intensified before Trump took office. Trump has consistently described the arrival of immigrants in the United States as an “invasion” and has outright denounced immigrants as criminals.
A demonstration against Trump is planned in Washington on Saturday. Eight years ago, hundreds of thousands participated in a similar demonstration. This time, authorities expected only up to 25,000 people. Thousands of Trump supporters are expected to attend a rally in the U.S. capital on Sunday. Several smaller protests against Trump are planned for the day of the inauguration itself.
