The United States has suspended the strategic dialogue with Kosovo indefinitely, citing concerns over the actions of the caretaker government, which it says have heightened tensions.
The U.S. Embassy in Pristina announced that the actions of the government led by caretaker Prime Minister Albin Kurti have “increased tensions and instability, limiting the ability of the United States to work productively with Kosovo on shared priorities.”
“We remain committed to advancing the shared interests of the United States and the people of Kosovo. Our relationship with Kosovo is based on a common purpose: strengthening peace and stability as the foundation for shared economic prosperity,” the embassy said in its statement.
The embassy emphasized that the strategic dialogue had been designed to strengthen economic and diplomatic ties for the benefit of both the American and Kosovar people. Unfortunately, it added, the recent actions and statements of caretaker Prime Minister Kurti have posed challenges to the progress made over the years. The embassy expressed hope that the dialogue could resume in the future “when conditions are appropriate.”
Kosovo and the United States had been expected to finalize the strategic dialogue this year, after Kosovo’s President Vjosa Osmani announced in January that an agreement on such a process had been reached between the two countries.
The strategic dialogue is a process that the U.S. State Department conducts with various countries around the world, with the aim of advancing bilateral relations. It involves high-level discussions between the two sides, held either in Washington or in the partner country, covering a broad range of topics, including defense, security, environment, energy, and economic cooperation.
