Who is the officer who pursued Altin Ndoci after his escape: The connection with Erion Veliaj

Fajton Baci is the prison police officer who chased Altin Ndoci, after the latter escaped yesterday from the Durrës hospital.

Officer Baci is the same individual who last year gave his mobile phone to Erion Veliaj inside the prison van, while Veliaj was being transported from the Durrës pre-trial detention center to the premises of SPAK in Tirana.

He testified that the Mayor of Tirana used his mobile phone to make two private phone calls, before and after appearing at SPAK.

According to Baci’s statement, the calls were made at a moment when Veliaj was under police escort, following the decision to formally notify him of the charges against him. Baci stated that the incident occurred in an area near the square where a second-hand market used to operate.

“As soon as we crossed the railway tracks, in the place where there used to be a market selling old items, Erion asked me for my phone to make a call. I gave it to him, and he spoke with his brother. I verified this later,” Baci said.

According to him, Veliaj also spoke with his wife. “I don’t remember the other details, but I know he made another phone call to his wife, telling her to take care of their son,” he said.

Top Channel published a video showing the first moments of Ndoci’s escape and the officer who chased him at high speed.

The officer who pursued Ndoci during his escape fired his service weapon at the ground, and the bullet ricocheted. The projectile ended up on the steps of the Infectious Diseases Hospital, while the shell casing has not yet been found.

Investigations so far indicate that escort protocols were not respected regarding the number of prison police officers required to accompany detainees or convicted individuals during medical visits.
