New testimonies are emerging regarding the serious incident that took place two days ago in the courtroom of the Court of Appeal, where Judge Astrit Kalaja was shot dead while performing his duties.
One of the wounded and a key witness, Ervis Kurtaj, recounted the dramatic moments inside the courtroom, where he was present as a party in a civil case alongside his father, Rakip Kurtaj. Both were legally confronting the Shkambi family in a property dispute.
According to Kurtaj’s testimony, the incident occurred immediately after Judge Kalaja announced the court decision, which was in their favor.
“At that moment, one of the opposing party members, Elvis Shkambi, stood up and approached the judge, shooting him multiple times,” he stated in his statement to investigators.
The witness added that as soon as they heard the gunshots, he and his father tried to quickly exit the courtroom.
“I grabbed my father’s hand, and we headed for the door. At that moment, the shooter turned and fired in our direction. We were both wounded but managed to reach the corridor,” Ervis Kurtaj added.
The injured were immediately transported to the Trauma Hospital, where they received the necessary medical care. Sources from the hospital confirmed that their condition is not life-threatening.
Meanwhile, the investigation into the incident is ongoing with high intensity. The Prosecutor’s Office is analyzing witness statements, security camera footage, and conducting expanded investigative measures to fully document the circumstances surrounding Judge Kalaja’s murder, a well-known figure in the country’s justice system.
The suspected perpetrator, Elvis Shkambi, was immediately detained after the incident and is currently in pretrial detention, facing multiple serious charges, including premeditated murder and intentional grievous bodily harm.
The tragedy in the courtroom has once again raised concerns about security in judicial environments and has sparked strong reactions from the public, while authorities are expected to implement new measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
