A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 struck late on Friday, local time, in the area between Antarctica and Argentina. The epicenter was located about 700 kilometers from the city of Ushuaia, in southern Argentina, while the focal depth was only 10 kilometers.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake occurred in the Drake Passage, an oceanic region known for high seismic activity, located between Cape Horn in South America and the South Shetland Islands in Antarctica.

According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the tremor was assessed at a magnitude of 7.0, also confirming that the depth of the earthquake was 10 kilometers, which makes the quake potentially more noticeable on the surface.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) announced that there is a risk of a tsunami following the powerful earthquake, urging local authorities to monitor the situation and take the necessary precautions.
