Japan is on alert after seismologists warned of a major earthquake this week following tremors measuring 7.7 in magnitude, which initially raised concerns about a tsunami with waves up to 3 meters.

The footage from the earthquake is terrifying, with the ground shaking showing the قوة of the tremors. The quake injured six people, two of whom are in serious condition.

Thousands of people were ordered to evacuate coastal areas. The largest tsunami waves recorded reached 80 cm. Tsunami warnings and alerts were lifted a few hours after the earthquake.

Authorities said the risk of an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.0 or higher is “relatively higher than usual.”

People in Japan still remember the major earthquake of 2011 that triggered a tsunami which killed more than 18,000 people.

After Monday’s earthquake, recorded at a depth of 10 km, warnings were issued about potentially larger waves for residents in areas closer to the epicenter, on the island of Honshu and in the northern region of Hokkaido.

The tremors were felt as far as Tokyo.

Japan’s location in the Ring of Fire means it can experience around 1,500 earthquakes per year, accounting for about 10% of the world’s earthquakes with a magnitude of 6.0 or higher.
