One of the rarest icons of Byzantine art in Albania, known as “The Baptist,” has been successfully restored after several months of work at the specialized Restoration and Conservation Laboratory of the Museum of Medieval Art in Korçë.

This icon, dating from the early 19th century and of anonymous authorship, is a valuable testament to the spiritual and artistic heritage of its time. It depicts the biblical scene of Christ’s baptism and is crafted with delicate wood technique, in the traditional style of the post-Byzantine painting school active in the Korçë region and beyond during that period.

Over the decades, the artwork suffered considerable damage due to natural conditions and the passage of time. Its restoration was carried out with great care, respecting the original technique, pigments used, and the basic structure of the piece, aiming to preserve its historical and artistic authenticity.

The intensive work of the specialists not only saved the icon from deterioration but also restored its colors, details, and spiritual light, making it a highly valuable object for visitors and researchers alike.

The Museum of Medieval Art, one of the most important cultural institutions in the country, continues to play a key role in preserving, documenting, and promoting our iconographic heritage. The restoration of “The Baptist” is further proof of this commitment and an important step in safeguarding our cultural identity.
