After the arrest of the police station chief and four officers, the operation expands again within the Saranda Police
The Police Oversight Agency has launched another operation at the Saranda Police Station, deepening investigations into the scandal of illegal constructions and suspicions over the involvement of police officers in facilitating unlawful activities along the southern coastline.
Preliminary sources indicate that so far, a detention order has been executed against an officer from the Serious Crimes Section at the Saranda Police Station, suspected of the criminal offense of “abuse of office.” He is Deputy Commissioner Edmond Ruçi.
It is still unclear what specific violations are involved, but the operation is ongoing and further details are expected to be made public by the Police Oversight Agency itself.
This is the second operation carried out by the Agency within a few days in Saranda, following the high-profile action on May 15, when the head of the Saranda Police Station, Gëzim Bashllari, along with three other officers, Deputy Commissioner Andi Duro, Deputy Commissioner Ajdin Ismailaj, and Inspector Robert Çullaj, were detained.
According to the Agency, they are suspected of “abuse of office,” “committing arbitrary actions,” and “failure to take measures to stop illegality,” in connection with illegal constructions in Saranda and Ksamil.
Investigations are believed to have uncovered a scheme in which police officers not only tolerated illegal constructions along the coastline, but in some cases also carried out procedural actions contrary to the law in order to favor the involved entities.
According to preliminary information, the Agency is investigating suspicions that in the most sought-after tourist areas of the south, connections were established between police officers and groups or entities carrying out illegal constructions, helping them avoid inspections and legal intervention.
The new operation indicates that the investigations have not ended with the detention of local police leaders, but are also expanding into other structures of the Saranda Police Station.
Sources close to the investigation do not rule out the possibility of further detentions, while the Saranda Prosecutor’s Office and the Police Oversight Agency continue verifications to fully document criminal responsibilities and identify other individuals allegedly involved in the suspected scheme of abuses related to illegal constructions along the coast.
