While Europe is facing a strong heatwave, on the other side of the world, Argentina is gripped by an unusual cold snap for the Southern Hemisphere. Temperatures have dropped to historic lows, causing severe consequences for the population, especially for the most vulnerable.

In the capital, Buenos Aires, a temperature of -19 degrees Celsius was recorded, the lowest in the past 34 years, according to the Argentine Meteorological Service. Meanwhile, in the El Palomar area, located near the capital, the temperature reached -7.4 degrees Celsius, the lowest figure in 58 years and the second-lowest since 1935.

Further south, in the city of Maquinchao in Patagonia, located about 1,400 kilometers from Buenos Aires, temperatures have ranged between -12 and -18 degrees Celsius since the beginning of the week. However, these figures still remain far from the national record of -35 degrees Celsius, recorded in 1991.

Meanwhile, in the coastal city of Miramar, about 450 kilometers from the capital, beaches were covered with snow at the beginning of the week. A rare phenomenon that had not been seen for 12 consecutive years, clearly demonstrating the severity of the cold wave.

The situation has become alarming for the homeless. The non-governmental organization Proyecto 7, which provides aid to this segment of the population, announced that in the last ten days, nine people have lost their lives due to exposure to extreme cold. Authorities have yet to publish an official report, but the organization warns of a worrying increase in such cases.

These events reflect the climatic polarization that is rapidly accelerating worldwide. While one hemisphere experiences scorching heat, the other faces extraordinary freezes, deepening concerns about the impact of climate change on daily life and people’s safety.
