The specialist doctor of ultrasound imaging, Gëzim Taullaj, who was arrested for taking bribes at the Fier hospital, did not appear this Monday at the Fier Court.
According to sources, the 66-year-old’s absence was due to a medical condition. The doctor’s legal representative, lawyer Xhevair Morina, submitted a request to postpone the session.
Taullaj, who was arrested in flagrante during a police operation, is accused of requesting and receiving money from patients to perform abdominal ultrasounds.
He was caught receiving a sum of money from a patient during official working hours at the hospital, while also seeing patients in two private clinics in the city of Fier.
During a search of his home, police seized a considerable amount of money, including 1,857,000 lek, 39,155 euros, 2,370 pounds, and 75 dollars.
The arrested doctor faces charges of “Abuse of office” and “Passive corruption of persons exercising public functions.” Investigations into the case are ongoing.
