Today or tomorrow, teachers across Albania are expected to receive their January salary, but it’s now clear: the anticipated pay raise for this month will not happen.
Sources from the Regional Education Directorates (ZVA) report that the government decision (VKM), which was supposed to authorize the salary increase for the New Year 2026, did not reach the education offices. As a result, teachers will receive the same salary as before, without any raise.
Prime Minister Edi Rama had widely announced an increase in teachers’ salaries in Albania starting January 1, 2026. However, this promise appears to have been just that—a promise—since it was not implemented.
Questions now remain: did the government mislead the public about this year’s salary increase, or will teachers receive a combined increase in March covering both January and February?
At least for January, the expected minimal increase did not materialize, and teachers will have to watch closely for the coming months to see if the VKM is finally implemented.
Teachers in Albania feel frustrated, and despite the expected additional 3,000 lek increase per month, it has not yet arrived at the start of this year.
