Three coordinated attacks using incendiary devices took place in the early hours of Wednesday in Thessaloniki, targeting the homes of three officials from the Greek party New Democracy (ND). As a result, five people were injured, while a 70-year-old woman remains in critical condition.
According to Greek authorities, the targets of the attacks were the homes of the head of ND’s Steering Committee in Thessaloniki, Zisis Ioakeimovic, former MP Savvas Anastasiadis, and politician Aphrodite Nestora. The perpetrators are suspected of moving on motorcycles and carrying out the attacks in less than 20 minutes.
The most serious incident occurred in the Harilaou area around 4:35 a.m., where a fire caused by a gas canister spread to two cars and two motorcycles. One of the vehicles belonged to Aphrodite Nestora.
Nestora’s 70-year-old mother suffered severe burns across her body and is being treated while intubated in the intensive care unit at Hippokrateio Hospital. The politician herself suffered minor burns to her limbs, while her father and two other residents of the building were taken to hospital with breathing problems.
A few minutes earlier, in the Toumba area, another gas canister exploded at the entrance of the building where former MP Savvas Anastasiadis lives. The explosion caused material damage to the building’s entrance, but no injuries were reported.
The first attack was recorded in Pylaia, where a gas canister was placed and activated near a house previously used by Zisis Ioakeimovic. In this case, no damage was reported.
Investigations into all three incidents have been taken over by Greece’s Anti-Terrorism Service, which is examining the possibility that the attacks were part of an organized and coordinated plan against leaders of New Democracy.
