An asteroid with a 2.3% probability of colliding with Earth on December 22, 2032, has alarmed space agencies and the UN. Scientists are monitoring its orbit, with possible impact locations being South America or the Pacific Ocean.
Fears of an asteroid impact in seven years are growing.
The rocky fragment has a diameter between 40 and 90 meters, roughly the size of a football field. It was discovered last Monday, January 27, and its orbit has raised concerns.
The probability of the asteroid colliding with Earth on December 22, 2032, has increased to 2.3% from the initial estimate of 1.5%.
A potential collision risk has, for the first time, put all space agencies on high alert.
The European Space Agency, in continuous collaboration with NASA, is working to gather as much data as possible before the asteroid disappears from view and reappears in 2028. It is then expected to make another appearance in 2032.
Data may continue to change until next April when more will be known about the so-called “2024 YR4.”
“This is the first time the United Nations has had to issue an alert and activate the planetary defense protocol, which sounds a bit like Star Wars, but that is actually its name,” says Jorge Bolívar, a specialist in the History of Science.
Earth has a very long history, and the possibility of an asteroid impact is part of our planet’s story.
“In 1908, an asteroid of roughly the same size fell in Siberia. It was called the ‘Tunguska event.’ What we know is that it affected about 2,000 square kilometers of land, uprooted around 80 million trees, and is believed to have caused casualties.”
Based on the asteroid’s trajectory, the possible impact locations in case of a collision are South America or the Pacific Ocean.
Until 2032, scientists will keep their eyes on the sky, and in the meantime, we are likely to hear many different scenarios.
