The court has issued its ruling for doctors Petrit Rexhepi and Elona Burba, who were accused in the case related to the death of Doriana Haka, the wife of former Partizani goalkeeper Alban Hoxha, in November 2014, just two weeks after giving birth to her first child.
Elona Burba, a resuscitation doctor, was found guilty and sentenced to 1 year in prison, which was converted into 2 years of probation, along with a 2-year suspension of her medical license.
Petrit Rexhepi, a surgeon, was sentenced to 6 months in prison, which was converted into 12 months of probation.
Doriana Haka, the wife of former Partizani goalkeeper Alban Hoxha, passed away in November 2014, only two weeks after giving birth to her first child. Her death was reported as sudden and sparked a wide public reaction.
After the incident, her family raised concerns that there might have been shortcomings in her medical care during the postnatal period. The case was referred for investigation and later prosecuted by judicial authorities.
The case lasted several years through investigative and judicial instances, including medico-legal expertise and testimony from medical staff involved in her treatment.
Following the trial, the two doctors involved resuscitation doctor Elona Burba and surgeon Petrit Rexhepi faced the court on charges of causing death through professional negligence. The rulings were handed down in the following years, including prison sentences converted to probation and license suspensions, according to the final decision.
Meanwhile, the parents of the late 25-year-old expressed that they have been waiting 11 years for justice, emphasizing, “a child is growing up without a mother.”
“For 11 consecutive years we have been waiting for justice. There was a confrontation between experts, questions and answers, it lasted a little while, and I became upset and spoke in court. I hope the judges take this into account. My heart burns, my soul hurts. I hope for delayed but not forgotten justice. My Dori deserves justice, a child growing up without a mother deserves justice. Please, judge, look at me, I have the right. That’s why I have sought to engage with the courts nothing else, I just want justice, endless justice,” said Hamide Haka.
