US President Donald Trump has renewed threats against Iran, warning of attacks on its infrastructure if Tehran does not reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
His statements came just hours after US forces rescued a crew member who had been ejected from an F-15 Eagle fighter jet.
On his Truth Social account, Trump wrote: “Tuesday, April 7, will be a day never seen before in Iran. Open that strait, or face severe consequences.”
The deadlines he has set have shifted several times in recent days. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal on April 5, he said Iran must open the strait within two days, or “it will lose its power plants and energy infrastructure.”
In another statement to Fox News, Trump said negotiations with Tehran are ongoing and that a quick deal is possible.
Meanwhile, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf called on the US to halt “dangerous escalation,” warning that the entire region could be engulfed in conflict.
Tensions have surged as Iran has significantly restricted traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route that handles about 20% of global oil and gas supplies, causing global energy prices to rise.
The conflict involving the US and Iran, with Israel also involved, has escalated since late February, with attacks and counterattacks raising fears of a broader confrontation in the Middle East.
