A large quantity of drugs has been seized by Greek authorities at the port of Igoumenitsa in a coordinated operation against international drug trafficking.

According to the Greek police, known as Hellenic Police (EL.AS), around 500 kilograms of hydroponic cannabis, also known as “skunk,” were confiscated—one of the largest quantities ever seized in Greek territory.

The drugs were discovered in a truck with Bulgarian license plates, which had arrived by ferry from Italy and had Turkey as its final destination. The 50-year-old Bulgarian driver has been arrested and is reportedly not cooperating with authorities.

According to investigations, the truck was officially transporting kitchen products, but hidden among them were packages of narcotics.

The operation was carried out with the help of a drug-sniffing dog and was organized by anti-narcotics units in cooperation with the coast guard. It is learned that the truck had been under surveillance for about a month, following information provided by authorities in Bulgaria.

Greek authorities state that most of the seized quantity was intended for the Turkish market, while a smaller portion was expected to be distributed in Greece.

The value of the drugs on the black market is estimated to be very high, due to the quality of the hydroponic cannabis and the significant quantity seized.
