The situation in Venezuela remains dramatic one week after two devastating earthquakes that struck the country, while the death toll continues to rise.

According to acting president Delcy Rodríguez, the number of deaths has reached 2,595, while more than 12,000 people have been injured. Authorities also report that around 38,500 people are still missing.

The two earthquakes, with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale, caused major infrastructure damage. According to official data, around 800 buildings have been severely damaged, while 189 of them have completely collapsed.

Intensive search and rescue operations are continuing on the ground, with local and international teams working to find people trapped under the rubble. Although hopes of finding survivors are fading as days pass, authorities have stated that search efforts will not be stopped.

A moment of hope came with the rescue of Herman Gil, who was pulled alive from the rubble eight days after the earthquake, in an operation described as a miracle by emergency teams.

Meanwhile, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) estimates that the economic damage caused by the earthquakes exceeds $10 billion. The Venezuelan government has declared seven days of national mourning in honor of the victims.
