A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 on the Richter scale struck the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in India on Monday night. The news was confirmed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), which stated that no tsunami warning has been issued.
According to the USGS, the earthquake occurred at 12:12 a.m. local time and had its epicenter in an offshore area, about 259 kilometers northwest of Sambang, in Indonesia’s western Aceh province.
The Aceh region is historically prone to seismic activity and was one of the areas most affected by the catastrophic 2004 tsunami, which claimed over 220,000 lives across 15 Asian countries. Fortunately, in this recent event, no casualties or major material damage have been reported. Authorities continue to monitor the area for any possible aftershocks.
