The Constitutional Court has responded today regarding the appeal filed by former Tirana mayor Erion Veliaj concerning the decision of the City Council and the Government to dismiss him from office.

In a brief statement, the Court announced that it has officially registered the request.

“The Court has published the registration of the request. The announcement is equivalent to a public notice,” the statement reads.

This means that Veliaj’s appeal has passed the initial procedural stage and will now undergo analysis to determine whether it will be accepted for review in a public session.

The former mayor opposes the decision of the City Council, supported by the Government, to remove him from office, claiming that constitutional procedures and principles were violated in the dismissal process. Veliaj has requested that the Constitutional Court annul the dismissal decision and declare it unconstitutional. He previously stated that his removal from office was political and legally unsubstantiated.

After registration, the Court will assess whether the request meets the criteria to be considered for a plenary session. If it passes this stage, a rapporteur will be appointed, and the review schedule will be announced.

This is a key development in the ongoing debate over the legitimacy of the dismissal of one of the most prominent figures in local administration in the past decade.
