A considerable number of traders operating in the Macedonian market in Korçë have shut down their businesses in protest against the administrative measures imposed by the Municipal Police.
According to them, the reason was the fines issued for failing to comply with deadlines for removing awnings and advertising goods in public spaces.
The traders say they were unable to apply on time due to the malfunctioning of the e-Albania portal.
“The municipality left violation notices without reaching an agreement with us. e-Albania was not working and the deadline was very short,” one trader said.
According to them, displaying goods outside shop premises is a common part of commercial activity and has not obstructed movement on sidewalks.
Some of them say the economic situation has become so difficult that they are considering permanently closing their businesses and leaving the country.
“Business has declined significantly. We are constantly being penalized and the only solution left is emigration,” another trader stated.
Meanwhile, sources close to the Municipality of Korçë say that traders had been notified days earlier about clearing public spaces and removing awnings.
According to the same sources, administrative measures were taken in accordance with the law against businesses that failed to comply with the rules.
The situation has reignited the debate between traders and local institutions over the management of public spaces and support for small businesses.
