Germany has detected the hepatitis A virus in a frozen berry mix imported from Serbia, the European Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) announced. This virus causes viral hepatitis A, also known as infectious jaundice type A.

As part of an official market inspection, in a sample taken on April 20, German authorities identified pathogenic microorganisms — the hepatitis A virus — in a frozen berry mix originating from Serbia, according to a RASFF statement.

The health risk was assessed as serious, and the product was reportedly withdrawn from the market and recalled from consumers.

This is not the first time the hepatitis A virus has been detected in frozen fruit from Serbia.

According to RASFF data, a similar case was recorded on July 10, 2025, when Germany also found the same virus in frozen berries imported from Serbia. In addition, in August 2022, the hepatitis A virus was detected in frozen fruit from Belgium, with Serbia listed as one of the four countries of origin of the fruit.
