Minister of Tourism Blendi Gonxhja reacted from Pogradec regarding the protests against the tourism project in the Zvërnec area, stating that the government is closely following the concerns raised by protesters and that a careful analysis is needed to find a balance between development and environmental protection.
When asked by Euronews Albania journalist Xhensil Shkëmbi about his stance on the protest, Gonxhja said he is sensitive to the situation and personally knows many of the protesters, whom he described as artists, creators, innovators, and young people engaged in public life.
“I am not indifferent to or unaware of the situation. We live in Tirana and it is very clear to us that this is an issue that requires attention, analysis, and deep reflection from everyone,” he said.
According to the minister, the protest initially arose from environmental concerns, and for this reason institutions are collecting information and verifying all aspects related to tourism projects in Zvërnec and similar cases both inside and outside the country.
He stressed that the government respects the right to protest and considers it an expression of democratic freedom in the country.
“We must preserve this strength of democracy and the right to free expression. We are ready to take all measures to address any issues raised by the protesters,” Gonxhja stated.
When asked about the fact that part of the protest slogans have a political character, the minister avoided commenting, saying he was speaking in his capacity as minister and not as a former political activist.
Regarding the balance between economic development and environmental protection, he said it is a difficult and delicate process, especially as Albania aims for integration into the European Union.
“Albania must enter the EU economically strong. There are countries with very strong environmental laws, but at the same time they have tourism developments near or even inside protected areas, when these are carried out in accordance with the law and public interest,” he said.
Gonxhja also condemned an incident that occurred during the weekend protest, calling it unacceptable and urging that those responsible be held accountable.
In conclusion, the minister praised the civic and youth participation in the protest, emphasizing that the voices of the protesters are being heard by institutions.
“It is a protest that we are listening to and to which we have given due attention,” he concluded.
