Fires sweeping through several of Greece’s most popular islands and regions are causing major concern. In the early hours of Tuesday morning, a large wildfire broke out in Kefalonia, prompting authorities to send an emergency 112 alert to residents in affected areas.

According to the president of the Faraklata Community, Evangelos Marinakis, the fire has been brought largely under control. “At the moment, we only have small flare-ups that are being monitored by the Fire Department, and there is no cause for concern,” Marinakis told ERTNews.

The blaze started at around 2:20 a.m. in a mountainous area with low vegetation between the villages of Faraklata and Prokopata. Despite the large fire front and strong winds, the swift response of ground forces was crucial in preventing the flames from spreading toward populated areas.

Winds and the use of aerial firefighting equipment are aiding in extinguishing the flames, while firefighters and volunteers remain on the scene to monitor for possible reignitions.

The situation remains tense in Fokida, Vonitsa, and Zakynthos as well, where fires have threatened residential areas and evacuation warnings have been issued to residents. Greek authorities remain on high alert to deal with the crisis.
