Authorities in Greece arrested 313 people yesterday during a raid at the university campus in Thessaloniki, the country’s second-largest city, after the Riot Police were attacked by a crowd that threw more than 100 Molotov cocktails, according to AP.

Greek police said that groups of hooded individuals left the “Aristotle University” campus in Thessaloniki early in the morning to attack a Riot Police unit.

The unit is usually stationed at a certain distance from the campus to ensure security following nighttime parties held on university grounds.

Attacks like this against the Riot Police near university campuses are not uncommon, but this is the first time so many people have been arrested after such a confrontation, during which an exceptionally large number of incendiary devices were used.

The Riot Police used tear gas and stun grenades to repel the attackers.

“One officer was sent to a military hospital due to burns on his face and legs, while a 21-year-old civilian was treated for breathing problems,” police said.

The university stated that the attacks were carried out by “extremists” from outside the campus, in cooperation with some individuals inside the university grounds.

They added that an investigation is underway to determine whether any students were involved.

The statement also confirmed that no permission had been granted to hold any parties on university territory.
