The Turkish referee Halil Umut Meler has been selected to officiate the upcoming match between Latvia and Albania, an important fixture in the Euro 2024 qualifiers. Meler, who has a rich international career, is one of UEFA’s most well-known referees and has been part of the Elite referee.
In 2023, Meler was involved in a serious incident when the president of the Turkish club Ankaragücü, Faruk Koca, physically assaulted him after a match in the Turkish Super League. This act provoked numerous reactions from authorities and international organizations, including the suspension of all football matches in Turkey for several weeks.
Nevertheless, Meler has continued his career and has been engaged in international competitions, including important matches such as those in the Champions League and the final stages of the Euro.
