The former number two of the Rama government and one of the long-standing figures of the left, Arben Ahmetaj, has been on the run for two years now. From abroad, he has declared a “war” on his closest former collaborators and “ex-friends,” who, according to him, betrayed his trust.

However, despite the accusations made from afar, Ahmetaj continues to follow several Socialists on his social media accounts, including Socialist Party leader Edi Rama.

As seen in the list below of people the former deputy prime minister continues to follow from exile, Damian Gjiknuri is one of them, followed by Edi Rama, Arbi Mazniku, and Erion Veliaj.

Unlike Veliaj and Gjiknuri, who also continue to follow Ahmetaj, Prime Minister Rama does not have Ahmetaj on his Instagram friends list.

Former Deputy Prime Minister Arben Ahmetaj has been internationally wanted since July 2023, in connection with two previous proceedings merged into a single case, for “Concealment of assets,” “Passive corruption,” and “Money laundering.”

While SPAK is seeking him, Ahmetaj has applied for asylum in Switzerland, together with his partner Erjola Hoxha and their minor daughter.

From Switzerland, he has given several interviews to Albanian media, where he has accused his former political collaborators and members of the justice system of wanting to see him in prison at all costs. SPAK has declared him internationally wanted.

The former close ally of Rama revealed that since 2022, when he was dismissed from the post of deputy prime minister, his persecution began. Fearing for his life, Arben Ahmetaj has stated that he left Albania not only out of concern for himself, but also for the safety of his family.
