Thousands of excess deaths have been recorded across Europe following last week’s heatwave, particularly among the elderly. Paris and other European cities experienced temperatures reaching and exceeding 40°C last week.
More than 3,700 excess deaths were recorded in France, Belgium, and the Netherlands alone as a result of the June heatwave, which pushed temperatures above 40°C. Experts have stated that this heatwave, which lasted approximately from June 20 to June 28, was the most severe ever recorded in Europe.
Authorities have warned that the figures are preliminary and may increase. France recorded 2,025 excess deaths, according to Health Minister Stéphanie Rist, or 29.1% above normal levels.
Although the majority of victims were over the age of 65, the French Institute of Public Health also reported a significant increase in deaths among the 45–64 age group. Deaths at home rose by more than 90% during the period of June 22–28 compared to the previous week, while deaths in care homes and healthcare institutions also increased.
