Husband’s family criticized her dress, 19-year-old takes her own life a day after the wedding

A tragic incident occurred in Azerbaijan, where a 19-year-old woman took her own life just one day after her wedding, following criticism from her husband’s family over the dress she wore on her big day.

Foreign media report that Lyaman Mammadli was accused by her husband and his family of appearing “naked” at the wedding because she chose a dress that revealed her shoulders and arms. Her father, Murad Bayramov, said she was deeply shaken by the criticism and took her own life in the garden of her parents’ home in Mingachevir, Azerbaijan.

“My daughter’s husband and his parents started an argument in my house because of her wedding dress. My daughter couldn’t bear it and ended her life,” he said.

Although Mammadli’s religion has not been reported, Azerbaijan is a predominantly Muslim country. Her father strongly denied media claims that his daughter might have been forced to marry an older man, 33-year-old Elnur Mamedli.

“After the celebration, Elnur came to our home with his parents and started a big argument. They told us: ‘What a shame. How could you let your daughter wear such an indecent and revealing wedding dress?’ We replied that it was a normal dress, the kind many brides wear. But they wouldn’t calm down and kept arguing.

The disagreement continued the next day. The husband’s parents accused my daughter of shaming the family. She couldn’t take it anymore. In the midst of anxiety and emotional distress, she took her own life,” he recounted.
