New York is facing an extreme cold wave, with temperatures in some areas dropping lower than those recorded in parts of Antarctica. The phenomenon has affected a large portion of the northeastern United States and has been described by meteorological authorities as one of the most severe episodes in recent years.
On Sunday, temperatures in New York City ranged from about −16 to −26 degrees Celsius, while the National Weather Service warned of extremely dangerous conditions. According to the agency, in some areas this represents the longest period of extremely low temperatures in more than ten years.
Meteorological data show that the extreme cold also spread to other parts of the region, where in areas of the northeastern United States temperatures approached −40 degrees Celsius. Warnings urging maximum caution affected more than 43 million residents, including major metropolitan areas such as New York and Philadelphia.
The situation was worsened by strong winds and heavy snowfall, caused by an atmospheric system that created bands of precipitation with rapid accumulation. In northern New York State and across northern New England, temperatures reached between −29 and −34 degrees Celsius. Meteorologists warned that in such conditions, skin exposure to the cold can cause frostbite in less than 30 minutes. Meanwhile, authorities confirmed that in recent weeks at least 17 people have died in New York City as a result of exposure to extreme weather, 13 of which were determined directly to be deaths from hypothermia.
