No more mysteries on the field! VAR decisions will be announced aloud by the referee

Gianluca Rocchi, the referee designer for Serie A and B, has confirmed an important change to be implemented starting next season in Italian football. This concerns a new procedure related to communicating decisions made via the VAR system.

“The new feature for next season will be on-field announcements,” Rocchi said. “The referee will be able to explain the decision made after a VAR intervention directly in the stadium and through TV broadcast.”

According to him, this long-awaited innovation aims to increase transparency and clarity for the audience, teams, and sports media. “This is an important step forward in communication, which we have been committed to for years. Now, explanations will be given in real-time, in front of everyone,” he added.

Rocchi also emphasized that the Federation will fully prepare referees for this change. There will be special training to standardize the language and content of the communication, so every decision is understandable to the public.

“There is no maximum time for on-field announcements. They will be made as soon as the referee reaches the final decision after reviewing VAR,” Rocchi concluded.
