84% of European citizens support the idea, while 352,000 Italians have signed a petition to make it real: permanent summer time throughout the year. In Italy, the issue is taking on a new dimension, as it will be officially presented in Parliament on Monday.

The clock change has returned as one of the most debated topics at both national and European level. More and more citizens, experts and institutions are speaking out against the spring–autumn time change, calling for its permanent removal.

In Spain, only a few weeks ago, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez brought the issue back to the European table, calling the clock change “completely meaningless” and asking Brussels to reopen the debate that has been stalled for years. Although for now Spain’s action does not include a vote or formal debate, it has been considered sufficient to bring the matter back to the European Union’s attention, writes Corriere della Sera.

Meanwhile, in Italy, the idea of keeping summer time for 12 months is advancing, supported by arguments related to energy savings, pollution reduction, improvements in public health, and increased safety. On Monday, deputies will present a request for a fact-finding inquiry to the Committee on Productive Activities, an initiative promoted by the medical association SIMA, by a non-profit organization, and by the LEGA deputy Andrea Barabotti.

During the session, the 352,000 signatures collected through the online petition asking for summer time to remain in force year-round will be officially submitted. If approved, the inquiry will analyze in detail the possible impacts of this measure: energy consumption, environmental consequences, effects on public health, safety, and changes in social habits.
