The well-known Cypriot businessman and president of the football team “Karmiotissa,” Stavros Demosthenous, was killed in a mafia-style attack in the city of Limassol.
According to preliminary police information, the perpetrators followed Demosthenous and opened fire on him while he was moving. The attackers, who are suspected to have been professionals and well-informed about the victim’s movements, made sure he was dead before leaving the scene.
A few minutes after the crime, a burned-out car was found in another area of Limassol, believed to have been used by the perpetrators to escape.
Investigations began immediately, with the main line of inquiry examining a possible connection between the murder and suspicious activities in sports betting.
The Karmiotissa club, led by Demosthenous, had previously been investigated by UEFA over repeated suspicions of match-fixing.
According to the Cypriot police, there were two perpetrators who were traveling in a stolen van. As the 49-year-old exited his home, they shot him.
His son put him in a car and tried to take him to the hospital. However, on the way, Demosthenous died, and the car collided with other vehicles on the highway. This initially led to reports suggesting that he had been killed in his car with his son nearby.
