Former Democratic Party (PD) MP and one of the most outspoken voices within the opposition, Ervin Salianji, stated that for major and strategically important municipalities like Tirana, the PD should propose candidates with a high political profile, matching the level of their opponents.
Speaking on the “Breaking” show on Top News, Salianji said that when facing a figure like Ogerta Manastirliu, who holds significant political weight and represents key structures of the ruling party, the opposition must present a candidate of equivalent political stature.
According to him, strong contests, such as in Tirana especially when the opponent has high-profile candidates should be met with equally qualified candidates. However, given the current state of the PD and its relations with other coalition parties, it is understandable to select figures beyond party structures.
Regarding the resignation of a party leader following electoral defeat, Salianji said that while this is a healthy democratic practice, the situation in Albania should be viewed differently. In principle, in a democratic system, losing an election leads to stepping aside and opening the way for new leadership. But in Albania, due to the lack of free and fair elections, the opposition needs a leader who continues to denounce injustices.
He added that in this context, Sali Berisha is necessary as a figure who keeps the opposition active, although he has stated that after completing his mandate as PD leader, he will participate in elections in a regular manner.
Finally, Salianji emphasized that the Democratic Party needs deep reform, starting from the lowest structures up to the central leadership. According to him, reorganization should begin at the grassroots level, from local cells upward, in order to create a functional PD prepared for genuine electoral competition.
