The Agency for Quality Assurance in Pre-University Education is working intensively to align the school curriculum with European standards by 2029. An important step in this process is the updating of textbooks for grades 1, 6, and 10, which are expected to be introduced in September 2026.
According to the Agency’s director, Gert Janaqi, around 140 textbooks across all subjects will be updated. In addition to updating existing textbooks, there will also be new textbooks for citizenship and the Albanian language, with a focus on strengthening national identity. “The Albanian language is an important asset, not only for Albania but also for the diaspora,” Janaqi emphasizes.
The updates will not only cover content but also the method of teaching in the classroom. Students will have more opportunities to work individually and in groups, while the use of technology in learning the Albanian language represents an important innovation. The curriculum will be flexible and adaptable according to regions, allowing each school to implement topics suited to the local context.
The goal of these updates is to make students more competent, able to use language and technology, and capable of handling real-life situations. There will be more practical hours and smart laboratories, increasing student engagement in the learning process and helping them develop practical skills.
Education experts, including Irsa Ruci, highlight the importance of adapting these changes to the realities of schools and the needs of Albanian children and youth. “It is important that these changes are not applied in a rigid way, but are tested and adapted to the reality of the students,” Ruci states.
This modernization and curriculum update process aims to combine the preservation of national identity, the development of practical and technological skills, and the strengthening of the Albanian language as a discipline with a clear structure.
