On September 5, 2016, Pope Francis canonized Mother Teresa, the Catholic nun of Albanian origin, officially recognizing her as a saint. The date of the canonization coincides with the day of her passing in 1997, turning this day into a special commemoration of her extraordinary life and work.
Mother Teresa, born on August 26, 1910, in Skopje as Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu, spent most of her life in Calcutta, India, where she dedicated herself with great devotion to children and the poor. For her humanitarian contribution, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
Pope Francis recognized the miracles attributed to Mother Teresa, including the healing of a woman from cancer and another person in Brazil suffering from a tumor, as evidence of her sainthood.
In Albania, September 5 has been declared an official holiday in honor of the Albanian Saint, replacing September 19, the day of her beatification. The Council of Ministers approved this change to highlight the importance of the canonization in both the religious and national calendar.
Mother Teresa’s life and works continue to serve as a global inspiration for solidarity and helping the poorest, encouraging people worldwide to follow her example of love and service.
