A woman in Spain has won the right to “parental leave,” and her employer will be required to give her 32 weeks of vacation within a year.
The Murcia Court based its decision on the ruling made by the Spanish Constitutional Court in November of the previous year, stating that children born into single-parent families should not be discriminated against or treated differently from children born into families with two parents.
“It is clear that the duration and intensity of the care required by a newborn is the same regardless of the family model in which they were born,” said the Murcia Court.
The woman who won this right said she sued her employer for not granting her parental leave and added that she did not want her daughter to grow up differently from other babies.
“I realized that my daughter should have the same rights as if she had been born in a family with both a mother and a father. These rights were not recognized when she was born. For me, my daughter was being discriminated against,” she said.
