The renowned Italian actor Remo Girone, known to Albanian audiences and beyond as Tano Karidi for his unforgettable role in the cult Italian TV series *La Piovra* (The Octopus), has passed away at the age of 76.
The character Tano Karidi, masterfully portrayed by Girone, became a symbol of European television in the 1980s and 1990s. He perfectly embodied the figure of the mafia boss, giving the character a depth and intensity rarely seen on screen. Although he played a negative role, audiences could not remain indifferent to him. Tano was one of those characters you wanted to see defeated, yet could not help but admire for his strength and charisma.
Remo Girone was born on December 1, 1948, in Asmara, Eritrea. He built his career in Italy, becoming one of the most recognized names in theater and cinema. Besides *La Piovra*, he appeared in dozens of films and stage productions, working with prominent directors and earning the respect of both the public and critics.
In 2019, Remo Girone made a strong return to international cinema with his role as Enzo Ferrari in *Ford v Ferrari*, one of Hollywood’s most successful projects that year.
A special part of his career is connected to Albania. He starred in the Albanian film *Portreti i pambaruar (i Clara Bellinit)*, directed by Namik Ajazi with a screenplay by Ruzhdi Pulaha. In this film, Girone played the Italian ambassador in communist Albania in a story about an impossible love between the diplomat’s daughter and a young Albanian man. Through this role, he became a part of Albanian cinema and earned a special place in the hearts of the Albanian audience.
With the passing of Remo Girone, Italian art has lost one of its most powerful figures on screen and stage. Yet his memory will live on through his unforgettable roles, especially as Tano Karidi a character not easily forgotten, forever etched in the memory of a generation.
