A new heat record for the month of May was registered in Portugal, with the maximum temperature reaching 40.3 degrees Celsius.

This temperature was recorded yesterday, Wednesday, in Mora, in the central part of the country, as announced today by the Portuguese meteorological service, which clarified that the previous record of 40 degrees Celsius dated back to May 2001.

The Iberian country is also being hit by an early heatwave, which is affecting much of Europe, where temperatures have risen to unusually high levels since the beginning of the week, particularly in France, United Kingdom, and Italy.

According to Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere, the country has been experiencing a heatwave since May 20, which has a “very high probability” of continuing until early June.

“The current heatwave could be the longest and most intense for the month of May,” warned the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere in a press release.

Most of Portuguese territory was placed under a “yellow alert” yesterday and today because of this prolonged heat episode, which has resulted in an increase in hospital admissions, according to Health Minister Ana Paula Martins.
