On the ninth day of the conflict in the Middle East, Iran’s Assembly of Experts revealed that it has decided on the successor to Ali Khamenei: his son Mojtaba.
The warning was delivered in a video broadcast by Iranian media by Hosseinali Eshkevari, who said that “the issue of determining the leadership has been concluded and the name of Khamenei will continue.”
He stressed that the vote was cast by the 88 members of the Council and that there is no need for concern.
The 56-year-old is a mid-ranking cleric who does not hold an official role in the regime, but is known to have strong ties with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has opposed the way the new Supreme Leader was chosen, stating that the appointment of Khamenei as his father’s successor would be “unacceptable” to him and that approval should also be obtained from the United States.
Trump said he is no longer interested in further negotiations with Iran, while emphasizing that Iran’s leader “will not last long.” “I don’t think there will be anyone left there who can tell us ‘We surrender.’”
Meanwhile, powerful explosions were heard in Iran on Sunday evening. Tehran is covered by toxic clouds, so Iranians are living in a situation of fear and anxiety about what will come and what they have witnessed in the past 24 hours.
Critical infrastructure has been targeted by Israeli-American attacks, particularly fuel depots in Tehran. The Iranian government has announced a new wave of what it calls Operation True Promise, with missiles and drones launched against Israel and other targets in the Middle East.
In addition to Israel, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait have also been targeted. A government building in Kuwait caught fire overnight after a drone attack. Meanwhile, two people, foreign nationals, were killed and 12 others injured in Saudi Arabia after a projectile struck a residential area.
At the same time, the Israeli army has continued its military campaign against Hezbollah. At least 16 people have been killed in the latest bombings, bringing the death toll in Lebanon to 394.
Who is Mojtaba Khamenei?
Mojtaba Khamenei has been chosen as Iran’s new Supreme Leader, replacing his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed by American-Israeli attacks on February 28.
He was selected by Iran’s Assembly of Experts, according to state media.
Born on September 8, 1969, in the northeastern city of Mashhad, Mojtaba is the second of Ali Khamenei’s six children.
He completed his secondary education at the Alavi Religious School in Tehran, writes the BBC.
At the age of 17, Mojtaba served in the army for several short periods during the Iran–Iraq War, according to Iranian media. The bloody eight-year conflict made the regime even more suspicious of the United States and the West, which supported Iraq.
In 1999, Mojtaba went to Qom, a holy city considered an important center of Shiite theology, to continue his religious studies. It is worth noting that he did not wear clerical clothing until that time.
Unlike his father, Mojtaba has largely kept a low profile. He has never held any government position, nor has he given public speeches or interviews. Only a limited number of photos and videos of him have been published.
