Today marks the 22nd anniversary of the Beatification of Mother Teresa, the Albanian humanitarian and Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Mother Teresa was declared “Beatified” by Pope John Paul II on October 19, 2003.
In May 2011, the holy ceremony of Mother Teresa’s beatification was held at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. Mother Teresa was a symbol of aid and respect for “the poorest of the poor,” to whom she dedicated her entire life.
On September 4, 2016, Mother Teresa was proclaimed Saint Teresa of Calcutta, in a grand religious ceremony in St. Peter’s Square at the Holy See. The ceremony was led by Pope Francis, who announced the canonization before thousands of pilgrims who filled the central square.
