Today, on his birthday, we remember film director Viktor Gjika.
Viktor Gjika was one of the most important and distinguished directors of Albanian cinema. For his significant contribution to Albanian film, he was honored with the title "People's Artist."
Viktor Gjika was born on June 23, 1937, in Korçë and passed away on March 3, 2009.
He completed his higher studies at the "VGIK" Cinematographic Institute in Moscow, where he graduated as a cinematographer. Together with Dhimitër Anagnosti, he filmed the diploma project "Man Never Dies," an adaptation of a short story by Ernest Hemingway, which won First Prize at the World Festival of Film Schools held in the Netherlands in 1961.
He directed many well-known Albanian films, including "Open Horizons," "The Eighth in Bronze," "The Stars of the Long Nights," "White Roads," "Resistance," "General Gramophone," "The Second November," "The Man with the Cannon," "The Commissioner of Light," "The Confrontation," "In Every Season," "The Hot Autumn of '41," and "People in the Current." He also directed documentaries such as "I Am Ismail Qemali," "When the Crows Leave (Kosovo)," "A Language That Does Not Die," "Albanian Art Through the Centuries," "Enver Hoxha Long Live," "Fan Noli Lives On," among others.
Throughout his career, he directed about 15 feature films and 25 documentaries. For his rare artistic qualities and his dignified works, he was awarded the title "Merited Artist" in 1977 and "People's Artist" in 1985.
