Actor Jani Riza would have celebrated his 84th birthday today. Known and distinguished for several roles in Albanian cinema, Riza passed away at the age of 47 in a car accident on October 24, 1988.
Actor Jani Riza was born on January 17, 1941, in the village of Bulgarec, in the Korça district. He graduated from the “Aleksandër Moisiu” acting school in 1964 and was subsequently appointed as an actor at the “A. Z. Çajupi” theater in Korça. He performed over 40 roles there, both major and supporting, becoming one of the most prominent actors of the theater troupe. He had a harsh voice, a robust physique, and a deep sense of the role.
According to “Albanian Actors,” Jani Riza stood out for creating characters from rural areas, people who were harsh, strong-willed, warm-hearted, and had a clearly visible identity (dramas: Moro Mokra by Ruzhdi Pulaha, Qyteti i akuzuar by Teodor Laco), but sometimes also portraying naive, pure, somewhat easy-going characters (Dalipi in the drama Këneta), or deceitful and flawed individuals (the drama Djemtë e Bato Gores by R. Pulaha). His interpretations also included characters torn by doubts and strong uncertainties in making decisions, causing them emotional turmoil, hidden fears, and dilemmas (Halimi in Të pamposhturit by Minush Jero, Delua in Përballë vetes by R. Pulaha).
Jani Riza was also a successful actor in film, having played over 15 roles. He stood out for his role as Xhezo in the film Përballimi (1976), but the role in which he demonstrated high-level acting was that of Bunac Saliu in the television film Agimet e stinës së madhe (1981). With this role, he won the Medal in the 5th Albanian Film Festival. Actor Jani Riza passed away in a car accident.
