A tragic event shook the entire country this Sunday, as a house in Maliq was engulfed in smoke following an unexpected fire, claiming the lives of a mother and her adolescent son.

The victims are 40-year-old Merjeme Azizllari and her 14-year-old son, Luka Azizllari, while the family’s 6-year-old daughter is in serious condition in the hospital.

The family’s neighbor, Benereta Pashollari, spoke to the media, recounting the tragic moments and providing shocking details about the incident. According to her, the foam of a mattress in the house caught fire, spreading dense smoke throughout the home. Due to lack of oxygen, the mother and son could not escape in time and died from asphyxiation.

Pashollari also revealed that the Azizllari family faced difficult economic conditions. The father worked to provide minimal income, while the mother took care of the children, who also faced special health challenges.

“Hardworking family, they were poor. The father worked, she took care of the two children, feeding them with what she could. The municipality helped them monthly, and they also received food and financial aid. The daughter was younger than the son; the son could walk, the daughter didn’t move much. The mother didn’t pay much attention to the children. We in the neighborhood would talk to them, say ‘wash up, clean up.’ We helped them, brought them everything. She didn’t bother anyone. Both children were on the autism spectrum.

At that moment I wasn’t there, but there was a foam mattress, and the children had disturbed the fire. The mattress caught fire, producing a lot of smoke, though no flames. The daughter jumped out the window, while the other two couldn’t escape.

The girl was saved by a woman, while the boy perished with his mother. This woman happened to be there because I had called her to get something. At that time, she heard the cries and the girl banging on the door, kicking it. The neighbor heard, came out, then another neighbor, and they managed to reach them,” said Pashollari.
